Building a Nonprofit Operational Dashboard Proof of Concept
A nonprofit needed a consolidated view of revenue and operational performance. Information was spread across separate systems, limiting how efficiently leadership could use it in business decisions.
CCT Atlanta’s consulting team built an Excel operational dashboard proof of concept. The engagement paired data organization and visualization with a practical guide for refreshing the dashboard each month.
Bringing operational information together
Our team gathered and organized data from multiple operational systems, then developed a multi-tab dashboard to consolidate and visualize revenue and performance information.
A useful dashboard also needs a repeatable update process. Our team produced step-by-step monthly refresh instructions so the organization could maintain the tool after handoff.
Five views in one operational dashboard
The dashboard included Executive, Operations, Capacity, Staffing, and Forecast views. Together, these offered a structure for examining performance from several operational perspectives.
Our team also delivered a scenario-modeling tool to support staffing and growth decisions. These materials gave leadership a basis for board discussions about business performance and planning.
A foundation for further development
The completed deliverable was a proof of concept. Standardizing data practices and extending the tool were identified as next steps, rather than completed implementation.
The project established a dashboard and supporting tools; it did not establish that the organization had adopted a production reporting system or achieved measured improvements in revenue or efficiency.
What should a nonprofit operational dashboard include?
Choose views that support leadership decisions, and define how each view will be updated. In this engagement, we combined executive, operations, capacity, staffing, and forecast views with scenario modeling and monthly refresh instructions. The proof of concept provided a starting point for testing the reporting approach before extending it.
